First by the removal of fans at the start of the pandemic, then by the large scale release of more than 40 wrestlers and employees, and then via its recent move to the Amway Center. In terms of that middle one, details continue to emerge about what exactly happened to who all these months later. For example, it was revealed at the time that some people were placed on furlough rather than released.
That largely applied to backstage staff rather than on-screen talent. To this day, however, it is still unclear who is still on WWE's list of furloughed employees, and who has been let go entirely.
Unless the employee themselves reveals the details, there is really no way of knowing. Take Nigel McGuinness , for example. McGuinness was one of the many placed on furlough, which actually made a lot of sense. Nigel McGuinness. His name emerged as a combination of things.
While there, he had notable matches with the likes of Samoa Joe, CM Punk, and Bryan Danielson which we will explore in greater depth at another time. Speaking of his time spent in the US, it was under the tutelage of famed trainer Les Thatcher that McGuinness first learned to wrestle. As part of the Heartland Wrestling Association, McGuinness spent a year training before he had his first match. However, due to a lack of income, his tenure in the US was cut short. McGuiness would return to the UK, where he would earn money to return to Ohio.
After he lost the title in the Fall of the same year, he later regained it and quickly retired the title. While each man brought a certain quality, character, and ring acyomn, McGuinness was unlike any other at the time. Despite winning when he first joined the company, it would take about a year before picking up steam and gaining recognition. With the title now in his position, McGuinness the face became McGuinness the heel.
That heel persona brought about a very familiar way of insulting the city, town, or state he is in. The most antagonistic way of doing it is by using malapropism and having him mispronounce things despite having terms with the same meaning. For as good as a competitor as McGuinness was, his character was a juxtaposition. The reason being he would defeat his opposition via count-out in the most unscrupulous of means. He was so talented that to win matches this way was unnecessary but a perfect reflection of the character.
It was how he was winning. McGuinness on the use of his Union Jack decorated iron. Regardless of the means by which he held the title, McGuiness was the Pure Champion for days. Despite getting a rematch for the title, McGuinness could not contend for the title if Danielson was the champion.
He made his live debut in September of and became a star rookie with HWA. As he would save up money from two jobs, he would split time flying back to the US to wrestle as well.
McGuinness lost the match and the Pure Championship was deactivated, but in his day reign, McGuinness became an indie superstar. He would go on to face some of the best in the indies, names who would have legendary careers in the independents and become WWE Superstars, not only keeping up but in some cases leading the pack.
And much like most of his peers, by the end of the s, he was offered a WWE contract. But things went sour quickly when McGuinness completed his medical screening before reporting to developmental.
