Frankly I would use a UPS as power surges and lighting can kill your gear. What is your MacBook Pro model? Have you tried using one of the other ports if it has one? Have you tried a second Mac to see if the issue is your system Vs the display?

Thanks for your comment. That seemed to be true for about a week, but as explained, within the last days there have been reboots but by far not as frequent as every minutes. These late reboots seems to have happened over night and I noticed that all open applications were reopened in different desktops.

During that time the sound will often revert to the 24" monitor. Occasionally, the sound will be out of sync from the video.
