Focusing on things you are weak at decreases your self-confidence, enthusiasm and overall performance. Having said that, working on your weaknesses is important as it contributes to personal growth. It is essential for self-development and personal growth. So instead of looking at your weaknesses as flaws, you should embrace them for what they are and turn them into your greatest strengths. To minimize your weaknesses, try to reshape what you do, use your strengths to compensate, find a complementary partner, or adopt ways to work as a team so that each person can draw on their strengths.
For example, perhaps you have no problems having conversations with people you meet for the first time, or being able to think of quick solutions in a tense environment.
Here is a simple exercise you can try. From the list of attributes in Table 1 , pick five that represent you the most, and arrange them in order, with number five being the one that represents you the least and number one being the one which represents you the most.
Choose those which really represent you. You can choose more than five if you want to. Your weaknesses hold you back from achieving many great things. Weaknesses are areas that you have the power to improve. It can be anything ranging from professional to social skills. Similar to the exercise you did earlier, pick five attributes from the list in Table 2 which you believe represent you, with number five being the least like you and number one being the most like you.
Exercises like the two you just did are very basic. There are many more elaborate tests you can take to find out about your strengths and weakness in more depth. It is a test designed with simple, straight to the point questions. We all have to acknowledge that we are really good at some things, and pretty lousy at some other things which are really important. So, you must be aware of your habits, behaviors, actions which undermine your daily performance, potential, and happiness.
If you are having trouble identifying your weaknesses, consider situations when you felt insecure or disappointed in your performance. Strengths-based coaching helps people become aware of their weaknesses and how to use their strengths to overcome them. It probably feels like you just have your ways of doing things and that there is just a limit to the things you can do well.
You possibly feel stuck with that, and there is nothing you can do about it. Or is there a way you can manage around those ways and somehow do better?
First, when it comes to your shortcomings, you have to understand the difference between two main types of weaknesses:. Weaknesses due to lack of experience — these are the ones that occur because you are new to an activity, but are likely to improve with some practice, observation, guidance, training, and reflection. Weaknesses that are the flipside to your strengths — these are the ones that occur in a situation in which you have to use a pattern that is not naturally you. A weakness forces you to depend on or try to develop a pattern that is not innate for you, and your performance never gets much better.
Despite a lot of effort, they can turn in the mediocre result. There is no real investment in developing of fixing your weaknesses that are the flipside to your strengths. There is no point in developing a flipside weakness.
